Does Fuel Return Line go back to Pump, or somewhere else in the Tank?

I'm asking because I'm doing some diagnosing on my 88 GTA and am wondering if any debris in the return line would go straight back to the pump, or if it would just get dumped into the tank and be filtered out by the pump sock.

Yes, I know it goes back and gets connected to a line on the fuel pump sending unit, the question is does that line on the fuel pump sending unit send the gas right back to the pump, or somewhere else?

I've looked at lots of diagrams but still can't tell.

Thanks

The return goes to the bottom of the tank, in the vicinity of the pump sock.

The fuel level sender and the pump hang/mount on the return line.
