Serpentine belt broke
I have an 88 Camaro with a 305 in it. I recently plugged in the A/C for the first time in a long time. Everything was fine and it even blew coldish air out. Then today I'm driving to work and hear a squealing sound and the temp gauge starts rising fast and the steering wheel locks up. I open the hood and the belt broke. What could have caused it to break? I'm getting a new belt now but want to know what to check for to prevent future breaks.

Re: Serpentine belt broke
It did. I unplugged it and put on a new belt and there are no issues. Should I replace just the compressor or would it be worth swapping out all the AC parts?

Re: Serpentine belt broke
If the compressor locked up, chances are it grenaded internally and sent metal into the system.
Time to replace things that can’t be flushed, not just the compressor.
Plan B: (if you’re broke, like me)
~IF~ the compressor is quiet, unplugged, you can go for years with no problems.
If it is noisy or gets noisy, time to replace it or find a compressor delete bracket/pulley.
