valve spring removal

yeah, so I took the heads off, trying to take off the valve springs so I can put some new ones on, and I can't seem to get them off. I've tried the compressor tool and all it does is move the valve down. Tried hitting the retainer on topusing a socket and hitting it with a hammer but that didn;t work either. anybodythat can help me?

Set them on a piece of plywood or something like that so that the valves won't get damaged by slamming into concrete; and really waylay the retainers with a hammer and a socket. The retainers have to get unstuck from the keepers, which will happen if you hit them hard enough to depress the spring enough for the valve to hit whatever the head is sitting on. Don't worry about hurting the retainers or the keepers, since you are replacing all those anyway.

May as well get a removal/install tool..about 17 bucks at your local discount AP store. Get the kind that holds the valve and compresses the spring...looks like a big C-clamp. This assumes you're planning to put the heads together yourself. Otherwise, do as RB states..you need to hit sharply and quickly on the socket.

Or, you can "rent" the spring compressor for free from Auto Zone or CSK or any of a large number of other parts stores. Like Mike said, if you're going to go the compressor route, the C-clamp type is the best for when the heads are off the motor.

man that sucks, I have the one that's not like that. I may try to rent one from auto zone(haha I work at advance auto but I don't think we rent anymore) but I'm almost about to say screw it I'm not sure I even want to fool with it right now, the springs seem to be doing fine even at 5800 shifts.
