Question about water meth inj

I have a 88 GTA 383 I built and a t56
I'm just wondering if anyone ever used a na water meth kit
Just to see how it was etc

water component takes heat out of combustion

it will reduce power no matter what the application

additional power comes from taking advantage of the drop in temperature (more boost pressure is possible)

It isn't recommended to use more timing in street applications regardless of octane improvements(methanol component) since the system utilizes a wear component which can stop or fail/clog any moment (pump is a life-cycle unit) plus any additional power would indicate a problem with the original configuration on pump fuels (inadequate timing controls knock in too-high-compression application for example)

in short. Not worth it.
Its more for if you have a delicate cast piston engine running lots of boost on gasoline as a safety support system with a failsafe.

Water/Methanol injection is an old technology which was used on some WW2 piston engine combat aircraft and some post-war transport aircraft to allow higher supercharger boost to be used in order to get more power during takeoffs and during air combat without the engine detonating. It works as advertised as long as you don't run out of ADI fluid and the pump works. (They were running really high boost plus 150 octane gas in the R-2800s).

A guy I used to work with had horrible detonation on his old station wagon going up hills while pulling their trailer. He put on an ADI kit and it solved the problem until the tank ran dry. So he started pre-mixing some and keeping a couple jugs in the car on vacations. When he heard the engine start to ping he would pull over and refill the tank.

So yeah, it does work.. You use a 50/50 mix of distilled water and methanol.

Unless I was running boost, or real high compression N/A, I would not mess with it. It is not considered a power booster. It is a detonation suppressor.

If you want more power, raise your compression and go to E85.

Or go to some form of supercharging (potentially including meth).

Or a 100 shot of NOS will throw you back a little also. Use with caution.

Its only as good as the distribution in the intake, and contrary to what most believe, air and fuel doesnt all flow the same thru the intake to each cyl port evenly, even through out the rpm pull. You can see different ratios at different rpms on some setups

If you get into water injection enough that there happen to be spare pumps sitting around. A nozzle, some tubes and electrical wire is cheap. So technically you can throw together a system for $60~ ranges. Depends how much hardware you have access to, just like with nitrous. Nitrous is really just a bottle, everything else is random lines and small metal parts, that if you happen to have... every engine is always 30 minutes away from 200 extra hp easy... sorry got sidetracked about gneiytrus

It doesn't need to be progressive. Just a switch on/off and choose a good orifice.
In that case, 100% distilled water injection is possibly a useful addition to gasoline engine in that it will tend to clean the carbon from pistons/chamber over time.
I would certainly consider the addition of such an affordably implemented system in any street application where oem paper/superior filtration and synthetic oil is used,
since it could fail at any time and this would have no negative consequences, it was installed merely as a one-off additional component to clean.
A switch could easily over-ride the system and it could serve a dual purpose (clean pistons / cooling the engine if necessary)
And be easily removed (used just for a little while)

I guess the first question is why? Are you getting detonation now with your existing setup? Are you thinking of adding a blower?

If you currently do not have a detonation problem and are staying NA, ADI will buy you nothing.

Just remember why it was invented in the first place, to stop detonation on supercharged engines running very high boost.

it dose work for NA applications....not as well as for boosted applications, but it dose work...water dose 3 main things when injected into an engine, it cleans the CC, it cools the CC alowing more boost/timing, and it expands when it turns to steam(IIRC from firefighter school the expansion rate is 47,000 times its original volume..someone can verify that) which is where the extra power comes in.

Too much water does hurt flame propagation, as its a diluter, and can lead to misfires or incomplete burn. You can google scholar search on the subject and get lots of good studies

Actually there are a number of technical papers written on ADI from back in the 30s and 40s when they were applying it to large aircraft engines to see how much boost and how low an octane they could run. I think they were running it on an Allison V-1710 or some such, but the same principles apply to the SBC. I know that it was used on the R-2800 engines in the old P-47 fighters, and also used on the R-2800s in the Convair 240/340/440 twin engine transports. I think the Germans were also using it on the Benz engines in the ME109 since their gas was so low octane.

If I had 12:1 pop-ups NA and were trying to run the engine on 91 octane pump gas, yeah, I'd look at adding ADI.
