Hey guys,

I'm having a problem with an oil leak. It took me a while to track it down. First I thought it was the front pump seal, then the tranny pan gasket because the tranny pan really is leaking and was mixing with the oil making it red. Now I found the source. It is a sensor that comes off just to the left (driver's side) of the distributor, has a wire going to it, and screws into a port that appears to screw into the block. Is this the oil pressure sensor?

Yep, sure is. Is the sensor leaking or is it the nipple out of the block?

 

It's the sensor. Advance Auto here I come...

Good to go. I'm still trying to get my dash gauge to work. If the sensor wire is disconected, what position should the needle be in? Mine stays pegged all the way to the right.

 

Dunno. Each car (T/A, 'Bird, Camaro) is going to be different I believe. They all have different gauges. I have the digital gauges with analog fuel, oil press, temp, and voltage gauges, but mine sweep vertically, not left to right. I know for a fact that my fuel gauge sometimes loses contact and maxes out high, but then the low fuel idiot light comes on. Weird, eh? It probably has to do with which contact loses current, positive or negative, as to which way it goes.

 

Pegged to the right would be the correct state it should assume. Infinite resistance to ground corresponds to the highest possible pressure; short to ground should make it go to 0.

Think of an idiot light switch, it uses the same logic. Open = high pressure = OK = light off, short to ground = low pressure = bad = light on.

 

I was hoping that was the case. Now all I have to do is find the wire and install my pressure sensor.
