Need tips from anyone that installed 4L65E

700R4 is a week link in my 87 IROC. Ford rear is strong and ZZ4 stroker is strong. I have a F.A.S.T system to control it. I would like to move up to the stronger 4L65E. Any tips on identifying one, installing or install kits would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like you want the 4L70E crate transmission from Chevrolet Performance.

The stock 4L65E is not significantly stronger than 700R4. They are THE SAME transmission but with an electronic valve body. I think stock they were rated at 265 Ft/lbs?!? Not worth looking for a stock unit. Either build the 700 you have or go to the 4L70E that's rated at like 475 Ft/lb.

Couple of reasons to go with a 700r4 build vs the electronic. Your ecu doesnt support the electronic trans. You will have to buy a controller which is 6-800 dollars. You can build a 700r4 for a good amount of power using the right builder. I recommend Cahall performance trans. If you had a holley dominator I'd use the 4l60E. Problem with the 700r4 is they dont make billet output shafts anymore. But your not at that hp level. Best route would be to rebuild the 700r4 to avoid the expense of a trans controller.

Thank you for your input. Engine dynoed at 400 hp.
Have not used the 150 hp shot of nitrous yet. My tuner is concerned about the 700R4 holding up with nitrous. It was rebuilt once already.

I've heard horror stories about 700r4/4l60e rebuilds. I talked to alot of builders. Used one I wont name here that is actually one of the premier tranny shops in the country. He screwed up a couple of things inside and I only found out because of circumstance. I had a 700r4. With billet input/ output shafts I really wasnt worried. I became worried when they stopped making the output shafts right before the build.Something to do with the helicut gear on it being costly to produce. One guy in the country used to make these and he stopped. This was all the back and forth between Cahall and I. When we decided to go 4l60E I had a K case 4l60e out of a Tahoe that was built with billet input out put shafts. Truck was totaled out before the drivetrain ever go in it. So when he got my case opened up he told me and showed me how shitty they put it together. Plus I paid way to much. I drove 8 hrs to pick up that trans after it was built. I would not use or recommend anyone to do do 4l60e or a 700r4 but him. He's priced fair and he doesnt bs. I did want to upgrade to the Holley Dominator from the Hp as the dominator has the transmission control right in the ecu. In your situation it's a separate box. I know fast sells them but they are not cheap. So best bet and ultimatly your choice who you pick, but rebuild the 700r4. At your power level built right and cooled correctly it will last a long time. Here is the site: https://cahallperformancetrans.com
