1 Pc Rear Main Seal Install Tool

Google has failed me oh so miserably as you would think this would be a quick and easy find. I need a RMS install tool for my freshly rebuilt small block. I don’t know why a brand new 1pc seal is leaking but I definitely confirmed it with UV oil dye. If I could get the Kent Moore tool number that’d be great because it’s supposed to help align the aluminum housing to the crankshaft but if there’s another proven installer you’re aware of let me know. Please! I have yet to truly enjoy this build and I’m sick of constantly working on it.

ABS pipe fitting section of the local hardware store. Dead blow and your lazer eyeball.

May I slightly hijack your thread? Same thing here. Rebuilt my 92 305, after about 1000 mls, first oil drops on coverter cover. Its definitely the RMS. It is not much but it drips constantly. I used a Fel-Pro Seal. Can anyone point me to a really good sealing RMS that is good quality? I don't like to take out the tranmission every few thousand miles...

Re: 1 Pc Rear Main Seal Install Tool

The Fel-Pro seal is a good seal but you need to make sure of 2 things 1). The seal ends up square in the bore 2). the lip of the seal does not get folded or pinched as you install it.
As GD stated get a pipe big enough to go on the metal ring and a dead blow hammer.
Also don't forget to lube the lip of the seal before you install it and that the crank does not have a burr or rough spot on the sealing surface.

Re: 1 Pc Rear Main Seal Install Tool

My greater concern is lining up the seal housing. Since mine failed so early I don’t know where the fault lies, seal not square or housing not properly aligned. If this motor had a few thousand miles I wouldn’t be concerned but it’s only got a few hundred at best

Re: 1 Pc Rear Main Seal Install Tool

Measure around the back of the crank to the seal adapter it should be even all the way around if one side is closer to the end of the crank then you have a problem

Check for excessive thrust play that might have damaged the seal.

Re: 1 Pc Rear Main Seal Install Tool

Will do but this thing has had oil leaks since day one so I’m optimistic the thrust clearance is a-ok.

Old 305 never lost a drop...

FWIW, the Fel-Pro seal is made from PTFE. This type of seal should be installed dry (they need to work on their .pdf formatting and spelling....)

https://fme-cat.com/livedocs/95(8-2).pdf

I believe that all OEM and aftermarket seals are now PTFE.

Honestly have never liked the PTFE seals. They are too hard and eat into the seal surface and require a speedi-sleeve when they fail (and they do fail). I have never had a problem with Viton seals used in other modern vehicles.

I was able to track down a Viton seal for my most recent one-piece rear main seal build.
