Getting rid of EGR and smog pump

Will getting rid of the whole EGR system do anything for increasing power? I know my car will not pass emissions testing without EGR (don't have testing here). I find the entire EGR system to be a complete pain in the ***, and if other board members' experiences are anything to go by, that damn thing is bound to fail. Other than reducing the number of things that can go wrong, will it result in any significant gains in performance?

I took the plenum off a few days ago to move the MAT sensor back into the plenum for the winter and noticed that the EGR passages and the runners had accumulated quite a bit of carbon buildup. Is this normal? I know my car is running rich (carbon in the tailpipes) but is the EGR preparing to take a royal dump on me?

Also, is the AIR setup related to EGR? Thanks in advance .

Removing EGR and smog pump is not going to increase power by anything that you can notice.

88,

I hope you weren't planning to get more power or better performance from removing the EGR. If you do a little research, I think you'll find you might lose a little performance without an EGR. It's a completely passive device (doesn't require any engine power) and will actually allow more timing advance and more power if it is working properly.

Check out GM Tech's excellent post on that topic at SEThirdGen.org. Or ask someone that has actually done a dyno run before and after with no other mods.

The AIR and EGR are separate systems. Carbon buildup in the EGR passage is not unusual, especially in high mileage engines. Here are links to the article Vader referred to on SEThirdgen and another on The Best Damn Garage on the Net, both excellent.

As usual, Vader, you are the man! Thanks for the links, kev. After reading the articles, I'm pretty sure now that the EGR is messed up on my car. The cold driveability symptom stands out like a sore thumb on my ride.

So what about....

So what if your running, say a miniram without EGR? Is this bad?

I have a TPI car that has been sans EGR since its birth in 1994. Dont think its hurting anything.

Removing it will only add power if its not working right. At WOT its supposed to be off, and so it wont make any difference if its there or not.

The AIR is another issue entirely. I have found through my experimentation with a sniffer that its useless as an emissions control device, and it just gets in my way. I wouldnt remove it to make more power either, the increase wont be much. You should be taking it off because you want to clean up your engine bay or its getting in your way of working on the car.

after removing my smog pump and air stuff i noticed a tiny bit of performance because you are completely removing a pulley...i removed the AC at the same time so i noticed some difference...also took off about 10-12 pounds becuase of the AC compressor...but i need to find something i can put in place of the whole AC/smog pump bracket...i need it because my tensioner pulley is on that...any ideas?
