Fuel smell after cranking
This problem is driving me crazy
After every start I can sense the smell of raw fuel in the exhaust. It seems that it´s too rich during cranking. So far I´ve been trowing lots of parts at the car. Some because of this problem and som for other reasons. This is the parts that has been replace so far.
- alternator
- fuel injectors
- Ignition coil
- ignition module
- pickup coil
- spark plugs
- spark plug wires
- cap and rotor
- IAC valve
- battery (optima red)
I´ve also removed the cold start valve.
What am I missing? When the engine is cold it starts pretty fast but when it´s hot it cranks for about 3-4 seconds. It´s always the same amount of time regardless how long the car sits since it was last running. 5 min, 10 min, 30, minutes makes no difference.
How can I check the ignition? Is it possible that the spark is too weak during the first seconds when the engine is hot?

More likely, you have a FPR leaking into the intake via its vacuum line, or injector(s) leaking down.
It's also not impossible that your CTS is either bad or disconnected, such that the ECM thinks it's REAL cold.
Not likely to be a spark problem, weak or otherwise.

I forgot the CTS. It’s replaced too. I also checked with a scanner that the ecm reads the temperature correct.
I will check the FPR vacuum line tomorrow. Another thing a was thinking about is what will happen if the fuel pump relay is bad and stops working when it gets too hot? If so the pump will run from the oil pressure switch. But that can’ explain the fuel smell of course

Check the injectors carefully. "Replace" isn't a guarantee. They are BY FAR the most likely culprit.

In that case I guess i need to pull the fuel rail and pressurize it when the injectors are out from the engine. I don’t like to pinch the return line in case it will be damaged

I guess you´re right. 20 psi drop in 2h... Something is leaking. I will pull the rail but I´ve noticed that the bolt holding the fuel line bracket on the front of the engine will be difficult to remove. At least not without disconnecting the fuel lines there.

It´s time to tackle this problem again. This is an idea I´d like like your opinion on. If I pull the fuel pump fuse while running that sould releive the pressure end reduce a potential leak from the injectors. And then wait an hour before starting it. Should hace a noticable effect if leaking injectors are the culprit. I need more evedence for that before removing the fuel rail.
