Power gains for new build

Hey guys , hope you can help me out. Finally got my 89 iroc z TPI running and I’m looking for some quick ways to add some power to it. Looking into cams, headers , manifolds but I’ve seen there’s debates between sticking with the TPI or going with the HSR . Anyone know what would be a good way to get some kick outta this thing.

Re: Power gains for new build

You have a power goal in mind?

Things you can do "quickly"..... it's all relative I suppose but the quickest would probably be a full tune up followed by headers and y-pipe.

Gears and torque converter make an enormous difference in the off the line feel and will be needed with more motor anyway.

Cam, heads, intake are next.

For now just trying to wake up the motor and get a decent amount of power while not blowing anything up. I’ve been looking at headers , cams , intake manifold and TB but I’m not sure as to which setup would be the best option. I’ll also keep the gears with the torque converter in mind as I get more power out of the car.

Keep in mind that anything you do to the motor beyond headers WILL ABSOLUTELY require tuning to get decent results. So focus on how you plan to accomplish that aspect first. It's a much larger challenge than actually buying and installing a camshaft or heads. Tuning solution first. Headers, y-pipe, exhaust, gears, and converter while you get up to speed on tuning.

^^^I have setup a full bolt on LB9 car that was very quick with the stock L98 cam, stock heads and stock TPI with a ported plenum, ported stock lower intake and AZ Speed and Marine runners. Got it into the lower 13s in the 1/4. Headers, magnaflow dual cat Y-pipe, 3" cat back, new higher rate valve springs, 1.6 rockers, 2,400 stall converter and 3.42 rear. Tuned with TunerProRT. Was very straight forward to tune with the stock cam.
