Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
New owner 1989 Irocz convertible. Car has been sitting for 4 years. I got it running , please listen to the video and any input would be greatly appreciated.
What color smoke? Usually white smoke (actual smoke, not steam) on startup is valve seals/guides. Black is fuel, can be a sticking or leaking injector. The ticking I hear in the video sounds like injectors and is normal. I don't nor have I ever used seafoam so I can't comment on if you should use it or not or if it would help anything in you case.
Also, in the video I think I hear somebody say TPI is a 350 and carb is a 305. 350 and 305 were both available with TPI, L98(350 VIN 8) and LB9(305 VIN F).
Is it ok to use seafoam? I thought I could hear a ticking. I am getting some smoke on start up.
Valve stem seals are almost certainly toast if original. Certainly a likely source of startup smoke.
Ticking could be hydraulic lifter adjustment, or noisy injectors (they are bank fired and all 8 are in the same bank so they all fire at the same time).
Sounds like noisy injectors and maybe an exhaust tick. Change the oil and filter asap. Disconnect the fuel filter and dump it into a container or syphon it out with a pump. Change the fuel filter. Put new gas in it and a can of seafoam. Smoke on startup is just the seals. Not a big deal. Can do it down the road.
Thanks for all the input. I changed the oil before the video. I noticed oil pressure was low, the next day it was a lot higher. I got a new fuel filter and plan on changing it.
I pulled the injectors out today and the part number is 280 155 700. I pulled it up and they are sold on ebay for 49.99 for set of 8. I ordered some new ones from South Bay.
Car is hard to start and bogs down when you throttle it. If your light foot it off and on it will stay running. I hope the new injectors fix my issue. I put a new icm and iac on the car. New plugs and plug wires , coil , and cap and rotor. Car also stalls when your try to put it in gear. Any thoughts on the injectors I pulled out of it??
The only thing I would recommend is replace your FPR diaphragm as well, its likely shot and can contribute to those symptoms and is easy to change while replacing injectors. Also maybe test your TPS, make sure its within spec. Here is a decent video showing how to do it if needed.
Sounds like you have done a pretty solid tune up, my advice when you go to replace the injectors is think about replacing your intake manifold gasket or at the least re-torquing intake to spec(mine was a bit loose, there is a good tech article here in the how to section) and also check/clean EGR if still present while you are in the neighborhood. Be sure to get a new gasket kit for the plenum etc so when you put it all back together so you have no vacuum leaks.
I forgot to list the FPR it was changed also. Thanks for the advice . I am in the process of installing new injectors . I am waiting on the fuel rail oring kit to come in so I can put them in. I also bought a new gasket kit. I will respond back later in the week once I have completed the injectors.
Ran into a problem, any advice would be appreciated. My plenum is not lining up when I try to bolt it back down . the header pipes are bolted down and tight. Any one know what might causing this?
This actually happens a lot I think, I had a bit of trouble getting the plenum back on the runners last time I took mine apart. Try one bolt at a time and go corner to corner slowly tightening them(be careful not to strip it)...Also a soft touch with a rubber mallet on the plenum could help nudge it just enough to get it perfect. Maybe try shining a light in the bolt holes to make sure its perfectly aligned, just take your time and be patient. Also are you putting each bolt back in the same location as it was removed? That was recommended on the thread I used for guidance when removing mine.
On a side note did you replace the EGR while in there? Some aftermarket ones sit too high and need to be ground down a bit to allow proper seating with the plenum.
Check for interference with the EGR valve and other items underneath the upper plenum. Getting the whole TPI setup back together is a bit tricky, but not too bad once you have done it once or twice. Keep everything loose while putting it all together and then start threading down all of the screws a bit at a time, moving around from once side to the other until they are all snug, then torque them down in a cross pattern. Another trick to installing the runners to the lower base and the fuel rail is to set the fuel rail with injectors onto the lower base, but don't push down to seat the injectors. Then set the runners in place with a couple of bolts in loosely. With the runners in place, push down on the fuel rail to seat the injectors, install the fuel rail bolts and torque them down. With the runners still loosely on the base manifold, then put the upper plenum on, install the rest of the bolts. .
I had the bolts in order as they came out. After having the lining issue some are mixed up . Previous owner had stripped a bolt on the passenger side runner. Weather is calling for rain the next few days I will get back once I get a chance to work on it.
I got it back together but it will not start unless I spray starter fluid. Then it will rev high and die.I am about ready to burn it. If I can't figure it out by the end of the week I will send it to my friend's shop. Any advice on what to check???

If it runs on starting fluid, that means it's not getting fuel in the cylinders. Either there is no fuel at the injectors, or the injectors aren't firing. First thing I would check is to confirm you have fuel pressure at the fuel rail.
I don't have a fuel gauge to check fuel pressure, but I am thinking fuel pump. Car will run as long as I give it gas. It takes a little while for it to start also, like its not getting good fuel pressure.
I am going to get one at harbor freight and test it. Spark plugs were covered in black carbon . I will post a video of plugs and car running today.
I was curious and pulled the carpet back in the trunk and PO installed hatch for fuel pump access. Doesn't the fuel lines have to cut to to get it out? I am not a fan of this I may reseal it and pull the tank to change it. After shining a light no once cut any of the gas lines.

my 92Z had been sitting for 6 years... i kept losing fuel pressure.. when i dropped the tank, i found lots of rusticles in the tank... you could see the exact fuel level from when the car was parked.... the little rust bits fell off and clogged the sock and the intake screen on the fuel pump. Once i cleaned the tank and replaced the pump, no more issues!
For reference, i had a similar problem. No reaction from the gas pedal. No acceleration... it had no more fuel to give. Also, my fuel pump was so loud, it drowned out the engine noise....it was trying that hard...
Off to a good start on removing gas tank . I have been spraying the exhaust
bolts every day and they came off easy. I wanted to make sure I could get the muffler loose before I went any farther.
