Doesn't that depend on what state you're in?

In NYS it is 25 years. Only a safety inspection after that. Let's see 2002 minus 1983 hmmmm... 19 years...25 minus 19... HEY! only 6 years to go. Do a search for your states DMV. State DMV sites should list the requirements. If not check out your local vehicle and traffic laws at the library, that will definitely list the legal requirement.

Yes, and no. some states have required inspections nearer the larger metropolitan areas but no required inspections away from those areas of concentration. For example, Ill-noise requires inspections in and around the Chicago and St. Louis areas, but nowhere else (yet).

Be assured that someday before we all know it every place will have required inspections, so be ready.

Exactly, if states had there way it won't change to much in rural areas, but it really comes down to a federal emissions system.
If the EPA had there way, we would all drive electric plastic cars, and couldn't smoke in are own home.

In Colorado 25 years is considered a classic, but I'm don't now about exemption from emissions. They have a pre-'81 vs. post-'81 standard though.

The worst place is here in the california dictatorship. They'll ram a sniffer right up any car's *** that was made '74 and after, and have a few laws in the books to go after cars made even earlier. Along with that there is also a visual inspection. Among other things, they also have some program where they're using OUR tax-dollars to buy other peoples' older vehicles and get them off the road, which is BS.

In CA its 1973 and earlier, they SAY that in 2004 it will go to 74 and earlier, and in 2005 1975 and so on.

They change the CA smog program and the things we do about every 6 months, so you never know what will happen by 2004.

We do a visual/functional/ and tailpipe testing.

where I'm at 68-74 requires a tailpipe test and 75-95 has visual, functional and tailpipe test... 96 on visual, functional and OBD II scan...

here in illinois if a car is 15 years or older, and classified as a show car under insurance, its exempt from emissions, all cars in illinois have to be tested from l think 1968-today.

Yea going off of what Vader said. In Denver they want inspections to take place on every vehical registered 64+. They want it done at least once when registering a vehical for the 1st time. At least that was what was going on in 97. In Colorado Spings I heard It's 20 years. If your military and stationed at F.T Carson They require an updated emmisions sticker on all vehicals that enter.
Further down south, Pueblo, Colo City, Walsenburg and Trinidad have no emmisions testing at all, but I heard Trinidad, on the Colo NewMex border is up for testing soon because NM has testing.
