How to clean out fuel lines?

Is there a good but somewhat easy way to clean out fuel lines? Car sat for several years. Cleaned tank, replaced pump and filter. I was going to unhook lines back of car and blow out lines, but thought that might just push varnish more to regulator and injectors. Any advice

New lines are pretty affordable. Check out Inline Tube and places like that.

You can try disconnecting the line at both ends and blowing it out with compressed air, and then running clean fuel through it into a clean glass jar to inspect the result, but if the line is rusty at all, you should probably just bite the bullet and go ahead and replace the entire line and all the fuel system components. Besides the issue of lines contaminated with rust, there's the possibility of a high-pressure fuel leak while driving down the highway.

Additionally, you might consider replacing the brake lines as well.

Re: How to clean out fuel lines?

Don’t laugh I’m a novice here. Now when you say both ends. You mean the front and the back? I was hoping I could unhook lines at back of car- supply line and then return line and use air into one and have it come out the return line. Would this just clog the regulator with more junk? Is there a easy access to unhook lines up front or are they under the upper intake. Really don’t want to get that deep into unless I have to. Could I hand pump some cleaner into the supply line have it make the rounds, clean and come out the return line?

On my '86 TPI both the lines disconnect right up there in the front of the intake right below your air duct where your MAF sensor sits. Worth a shot cleaning em out first.

Depending on which engine you have, there are multiple lines/connections underhood. If you're going to attempt such a job yourself, I strongly recommend you first obtain a service manual for the car, preferrably a Helms manual, especially if you're a beginner. Keep in mind that you're dealing with gasoline---highly volatile---and all proper safety precautions must be followed when working on a fuel system.

IMO, the best plan is to disconnect the feed as well as the return line at both ends, and blow them out individually, again, catching the result in a jar so you can inspect any contaminant(s).

Re: How to clean out fuel lines?

I'm in the same predicament as you. Car sat for like 10 years and the fuel system needs to be cleaned. I plan on replacing the fuel lines to eliminate any possible issues (especially a leak in the line that could catch fire). Keep a fire extinguisher close by just in case.
