383 Stroker/Holley Fuel Pump - Car Dies Under Load
Hi guys,
Posting this for a friend who isn't on the boards. Hoping to relay him some useful information from people more knowledgeable in fuel systems than I am.
The setup:
383 Stroker motor with a Holley Quick Fuel SL-600-VS Slayer Carb (600cfm) - Carb needs 6.5 PSI
Holley Red Fuel Pump
Aeromotive 13205 Fuel Pressure Regulator (rated for 5-12 PSI) - Set at 6.5 PSI while the car is at idle
Fuel pump is mounted in front of the rear axle as you can see in the attached photo below. There is a single line with 2 fuel filters (one before the pump, one right before the carb) from the tank to the carb, no return line. Vented gas cap.
The car will fire up and idle just fine. It idled for hours with no issue. You can rev it up in park with no issues. But the moment you put it in Drive and give it any significant amount of gas, it falls on its face and dies.
Re: 383 Stroker/Holley Fuel Pump - Car Dies Under Load
Doesn't quite sound like a fuel pump issue. There would be fuel in the fuel bowl to handle being in drive at least momentarily. May be a vacuum leak(first thing I'd look for) May be too lean. May have an issue in the carb transferring from the idle circuit to the primary circuit ie. accelerator pump issue. Those would be on the start of my checklist.
Re: 383 Stroker/Holley Fuel Pump - Car Dies Under Load
I failed to mention that the carb goes dry when under load. You can see theres no fuel in there. But it fires back up and idles just fine. Front jet was replaced as it had a burr and was getting stuck, we thought that was the issue but apparently not.
Once it dies, he removes the jet. Turns on the key until fuel comes out. Then put the jet back in and it runs until it dies a little ways down the road. Idle is fine.
He says the sound of the pump changes. It gets loud then a little quieter. I do know that pump is louder when no fuel is running through it.
