Do Not Even Attempt This.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE MTF YOURSELF!
My T5 needed new fluid so I thought I could do it myself WRONG! After draining ALL of it, I realized it was 85 weight GEAR OIL and NOT the dexron II Auto fluid that is supposed to go in T5s.
- The refill plug is SOOO high up there that NOTHING can get up there (that I have or could think of at least)
- Calling many mechanics who have NO clue.
- Then I go out and buy 4 quarts of dexron II
- Go buy a siphon, doesn't work, all over ground
- Go buy turkey baster, doesn't work, ran down my arm, all of it.

So I end up going to jiffy lube and paying then 25 bucks for flush, fluid and refill.

Troop, its not that bad....a PITA, but not bad.

What you need is a pump attatchment that replaces the cap on your ATF/Gear oil bottle. This attachment includes a 2-3ft tube that you stick into the tranny. Just pump like you are inflating a tire and watch the fluid go where it needs to. Its that simple.

Note: When getting fluid, get the gallon size container. I couldnt find a pump that would fit the quart sized bottles and had to play around with the pump to get it to work right. Seems like I got just as much ATF on the ground as I did in the tranny.

Hope this helps

I have a pump I got at the boat store, maybe $7 or so. Like the other post said, it screws onto the top of the bottle, and you pump it about like some kinds of spray bottles... piece of cake. That one fits quart bottles like gear lube and ATF. I have the one he was talking about too, from Auto Zone IIRC, it only fits the gallon bottles which makes it kind of useless. Don't get that one, go to the boat store instead.

You guys are nuts. Just take off the shifter and pour it in there!

BTW, only the world class T5s use Dextron. A non WC T5 (such as the stock trans in your 84) uses gear oil.

I use a long rubber hose and funnel from the engine bay, allowing the dextron to slowly drain into the side fill hole. A synthetic trans fluid should be the preffered fluid I suppose.

if it makes U feel any better it is just as hard on a Jap car, I had to snake a tiny *** tube through the entire engine bay and fill it from the side hole on my talon, It took me about a half hour cuz the fluid was so thick you had to pour it really slow or it clogged the line.

I just used tubing from the engine bay as described before, it comes in handy to have that crap lying around. It only took like 10mins.

Really?! I know the S-truck T5s have used ATF throughout the production run. Hell, even my '76 Vega with a T50 (close cousin to the T5) used ATF.

The World Clas T5's are a newer, slightly stronger version of the old T5's... FYI

on the side of my 1987 T-5 it says DEXTRON II only....ummm I looked on it for a World Class Stamping and could not find one......Are you telling me i have a WC T-5????.....as far as i can tell it is not.

I filled it in the car...I got one of thoseattachment from wal-mart that have a 1 foot tube on the end and screw on to the qt bottle with a valve......I just screwed it on, closed the valve put it up there and SQUEEZED.....3.5 qt (that is what it says i Need)

I just pull apart the shifter and pour it down there, as to the fluid debat, the reason you have to use ATF in some T-5 and not others is because the newer ones have a kind of clutch material on the blocking rings (ex. 5th gear) insted of the normal groves, because of this disign the bearings are closer tolerance to accomadate the 7wt ATF insted of gear oil, so getting the proper fluid is inportant.

The hose and funnel idea to the engine compartment is a good idea. One hint before you do that though... Put an oil pan underneath the tranny. Otherwise you'll get fluid ALL over your garage floor. (Luckily my little brother was out there and said, "Uh, Kyle... there's red stuff all over the floor..." so I stopped before I finished dumping the last of the bottle on the floor. I used almost a whole bag of absorbant on that mistake. )

You guys think 2lb gear oil for the differential would work alright?
Would that boat store deal work too?

Yea really.

I'm still waiting for the blazer I sold to crunch the transfer case because I put 85 140w in it, or prehaps my 91 4x4 will die also because I dont use dex III in it. Its doubt full. Gear oil, as long as its not too thick wont hurt your tranny. I put many MANY miles on the S10 with gear oil in the transfer case instead of dex and had no problems and that is a full time power transfer unit.
if the t5 in the truck blows you can tell me that you told me so, but I stick by gear oil.
