Mystery piece of metal found in oil pan

Hi all, big long story I’ll just make short. Took my oil pan off today and found this large piece of metal inside. Can anyone determine wtf it is? I’m not feeling well 😬 😱. I’ll attach a pic beside a dime. it is beveled from both sides.I’d really like to know where it came from, but I’m not familiar enough with all the interior engine parts.

Looks like a piece of a lifter.

I'd say start by pulling your valve covers and do an inspection.

Re: Mystery piece of metal found in oil pan

Doesn't look like any part of an engine I can think of. No part of a lifter is beveled from both sides like that, so I doubt that's what it is.

What's it made of?

Pushrod cup is. Somebody may have had a lifter failure and that piece may have never been extracted from the engine.

Re: Mystery piece of metal found in oil pan

You're right: could be that.

Not likely that it's from a failure in the current build; if it was, I suspect you'd be asking about something else too, like loud weird valve train noises and such.

it’s steel, about 5/6” in diameter.

that looks like it. My lifters make a bit of noise, I’ve assumed it’s normal from my flat tappet cam. I’d also assume that something would be making much more noise if it was a current failed part.

Re: Mystery piece of metal found in oil pan

5/6" = .8333333
Lifter diameter is .842"

This is pointing to a lifter part.

Good think for you that Ed Cole decided to install a screen on the oil pump pickup.
