Replacing temperature sending unit

Just got a 91 RS Camaro that the temp gage isn't working. I've found that what I think is the wire is disconnect and wrapped around PS pump lines. I want to just replace the sender unit while I fix the harness. Do I need to drain the coolant first?

I didn't... Expect to get spilled on a bit, and wear eye protection. Just need to be quick about screwing the new one in.

Re: Replacing temperature sending unit

Yup; it goes into the water jacket, and some WILL come out, but if you make good clear access to it so that you can work on it without fumbling around, and are READY (Teflon tape already wrapped around the new one before you pull the old one for example), you can get by with not losing too terribly much.
