In the middle of a new cam/heads/timing chain swap. I have dropped the oil pan down as much as possible but still had to trip the lip on the back of the timing cover about 1" on each side - everything was filed down so no sharp edges. Did a few test fits and noticed that I had taken chunks out of the gasket on both sides. Note that I have the factory 1 piece seal. Am I an SOL and need to drop the oil pan and install a new gasket or will RTV seal this up?
IMHO you'll be fine. IIRC the cover seal gasket is a triple seal. It looks like only your outer seal is nicked. If I wanted to be more sure, I might throw some RTV just in that spot when I reassemble and let it dry for 24 hours. Gasket looks fine to me everywhere else.
Enjoy your beer! Well deserved doing a timing chain yourself. Have a second one on me. When I did my cover, with the oil pan in place and an OEM seal, I used the Permatex "Ultra Copper" at the ends. And NOTHING leaked. Let it dry 24 hrs before you start it.
