Will this work? if not, what do I do?
I currently have a 10 bolt 28 spline axle, with 3.08 posi gears. The size is 7.625. I want to turn the 3.08 to 3.42., and was wondering if this would work. On jegs, Part #836-49-0005-1 they have 3.42 gear set, but it says for gm vehicles with 7.5", will this work? or does it HAVE to be 7.625? please let me know what options I have.. thanks guys..

The 7.5" and 7.625" are the same rear end. I haven't yet figured out why people think they're different. That number is the inner diameter of the ring gear, where it fits on the carrier. The same gears fit all 7.5" 10-bolts from 78 to 2002 in A, B, F, and G cars and S trucks, so the carrier flange has to be the same diameter. ¿¿How can the diameter possibly be different, if it's the same??
However, the 3.42 gears will not work in your rear end as it now sits, but for a different reason. Your carrier is a 2-series. You will either need the special 3-series gears that are extra thick to fit on a 2-series carrier (yuck), a spacer (yuck but not as bad), or a 3-series carrier. I'd recommend the SLP $99 posi unit, it is 28 spline, 3-series, and posi. Best deal going.
