Is my battery dead or does it need a charging, HELP!!!!
Hey guys,
I have a 1992 RS Camaro w/ v6 engine and an automatic. The car usually sits for months at a time, when I usually start it every couple days. But lately, I have been starting it every two days or so, and I tried to start it yesterday and the starter doesn't have enough juice to start, but the stereo and lights and hatch motor work fine, although a little slow. The voltmeter says just a hair under 12 volts. I have a .5 farad capacitor for my 500 watt stereo hooked up to it, but is the battery dead for good, or does it need to run for an hour or so? I start it for five minutes once or twice a week remember, I don't want to waste any money on a new one, the battery is anywhere from 4 to 2 years old. Its a prostart. I haven't taken it on the road since early december. Let me know, please!

It could also be your alternator that is all messed up too cuz your car is drawing all its power from the battery. So all you would really need to do is check your alternator and re-charge your battery but since its 2 to 4 years old replace that thing anyways ok.
If the battery is over 3 years old it is probably bad, otherwise have it and your electical system tested with both the car off and running. Remember.. a bad alternator can kill a battery, but a bad battery can also kill an alternator. It's best to handle these things quickly.
IF YOUR CAR SETS FOR MONTHS AT A TIME, I SUGGEST YOU DISCONECT THE BATTERY.
STARTING THE CAR TAKES MORE POWER FROM THE BATTERY THAN CAN BE REPLACED BY THE ALTERNATOR IN LESS THAN ABOUT 30 MINUTES OF DRIVING.
TRY HAVING THE BATTERY FULLY CHARGED AND NOT START CAR UNLESS YOU CAN DRIVE FOR 30 MINUTES OR SO.
THE CAPACITOR MAY ALSO BE ADDING TO THE NORMAL SMALL DRAIN ON THE BATTERY.
LOTS OF LUCK JIMJOHN
