Paper clip trick not working…

Trying to pull codes with the paper clip trick. I’m not getting anything when A &B are jumped with the ignition in.

if I remember, it’s been a while, but I remember the fan coming on when I jump A&B. That’s not happening either. What should I do next?

thanks

Just for verification, the ALDL terminals are arranged like this, as viewed from the face (open) side of the connector:

Re: Paper clip trick not working…

For some reason it worked today. It threw a code 21. High voltage from the TPS. I tested it and it was 4.75 volts with the throttle closed. Didn't change at all while moving the throttle. So I'm assuming the TPS is toast and would explain why its running like ****.

However, My fan is not working and according to the FSM it should be running when I jump A&B. ( And I remember the fan running in the past when I checked for codes) Where do I start when figuring out why my fan isn't working?

Assuming you have an electric fan controlled by a relay, I would start at the relay. Fashion a jumper cable using two male spade connectors and wire of the same gauge that you are bypassing, pull the relay, and bypass the relay with the jumper for 2-3 seconds. If the fan turns on, your problem is with the relay, or the activation signal circuit to the relay. If the fan does not turn on, you have an open to the power or ground wires going to the fan, or the fan motor is dead. That isn't to say you don't have the previous issues at the relay or before as well, but I like to start by verifying actual fan workage.
