Fuel Filler Neck Leak and Repair

So as I have mentioned dozens of times, I made the mistake of taking my bird to the shop. Got started dropping my transmission today and found out I have a fuel leak where the fuel fill neck meets the gas tank.

The tank I bought didn't come with a neck. I bought a tank and a neck separately. The neck was lost by the shop but replaced, and the part they provided was made for the bird. I've looked for a solution to this issue but everything I find involves a new tank with a neck already installed. A buddy of mine recommended I use some J-B Weld Tankweld Epoxy. It's tempting and I've seen several people use it, but I want to make sure this will work before I get into anything. I'd rather not have to drop this tank AGAIN. Especially on a 100+ degree day.

Many thanks everyone. Looking forward to the advice.

Better to solder it in.

Would if I had the equipment. That's why I'm asking. No one near me will solder or weld it together.

Absolutely not. Can't bring any torch, flame, or welding equipment anywhere[/]i near there.

Your choices are to try the JB (I'm not a fan), or else buy another tank that has the neck already on it.

Good luck. Be safe.

That's what I was thinking. Would make it go boom.

I'll just go ahead and epoxy it. It's my best bet right now given the other work I gotta do and the resources I don't have.

Thanks man.

Re: Fuel Filler Neck Leak and Repair

Since it hasn't had gas in it (how can a tank with no filler neck have gas?) it shouldn't matter.

The way the old-timers repaired gas tanks, was to fill em with exhaust first. Not that I'd ever try it, butt, that's how it was done.

Re: Fuel Filler Neck Leak and Repair

Correct way to do it is a new tank with the neck already installed. the Cheap way, well...Welding would be difficult to get right unless you temporarily epoxied it in place first and then welded because the fitment of the filler neck has to be just right on these cars in my experience with dropping my tank. In my experience, welding gas tanks is not as dangerous as people say, as long as you thoroughly clean the tank and make sure there are no fumes vapors. If I were on a tight budget I would try epoxy. JB weld in general has worked well for me in MANY applications. Good luck

^^^^This is true, as long as the tank has never had fuel in it.

Again, OP; be safe.
