Glowing headers Even with Advanced timing? 383 stroker

Headers started to glow on me after 2 minutes of running the car. I've been chasing a overfueling/rich condition for a while and wanted to try adjusting timing today but I noticed the headers on both sides light up red right where it connects to the y pipe.

Carb adjustments were 1.5 turns out and timing was at 16-18ish degrees.

Car has been running rich in the past (black smoke out of exhaust, having to hold pedal to floor to start)

Any ideas what this could be? I always thought retarded timing could cause this, but my timing is quite far Advanced at idle.

And yes my plug wires are on the correct order.

The most common cause of such a condition is retarded timing. Have you checked the timing tab/balancer against #1 cylinder TDC to be certain you're setting the timing correctly?
