Fuel leak

Hi i have a Trans Am Pontiac Firebird 5.0 V8 H.O 1984, I've tried to start it and wouldn't fire and there was a strong smell of fuel and when i looked on the floor it was all fuel so it's not getting to the carb but so i've found it's leaking from the Fuel pump gasket that bolts to the engine could that be the reason why it's not even atempting to start or could that be why there's no fuel getting to the carb, also found an after market Fuel filtter as well, Just needing some advise or could it be something more serious.

Re: Fuel leak

Sounds like the fuel pump has failed. Diaphragm is broken.

Leaking from that place means that fuel is also getting into the oil. You'll DEFINITELY want to change the oil before you try again to start it. You'll probably find that there's ALOT more fluid in the crankcase than you left there last time you put oil in it. The "new" fluid is gasoline.

Re: Fuel leak

Replace the fuel pump and change the oil (& filter of course). No need to "service the engine".

Re: Fuel leak

Hi sorry its been a few months after further looking in to it and well daft me thought is was the fuel pump well it wasn't there's a rubber pipe in between a metal pipe that is the outlet to the carb and it has split in to and the fuel under pressure is coming out there so i think that's why not even atempeting to start as no fuel is getting to the carb due to the split hose

There's your problem right there, some previous owner hacked the metal line and put a rubber splice in it, for whatever inane reason moronic previous owners do such things. I don't have any handy pics, but I promise you that when your car left GM's factory, the fuel line running from your fuel pump to your carb most certainly WAS an all metal line, with no rubber splices in it whatsoever. Here is a link to the right part you need, well look at that, , , , satisfaction for $31.99

What you DON'T want to do is to just replace the piece of rubber line, you want the correct all metal line in there. Unless, that is, you have a particular affinity for bonfires

Yeah, seriously.......
