Fuel Pump/Lines and Fittings

Hello all....I hope this is the right forum to ask this question...

Since 2010 I've had swapped my 350 TPI to a 406 carbureted set up. At that time, I had 3/8" braided line coming from tank to a pre-filter, to an external pump and then all the way up front through the regulator and to the carb using nothing but -8an fittings.

2016 my pump went out as I simultaneously swapped to a 427. (Holley pn 12-700) was installed

April 2023, my pump goes out again. I go to find a replacement for my Holley Fuel Pump and that particular one is no longer available. It is superseded by pn 12-800. The difference is higher gph volume and the INPUT fitting takes a -10an instead of a -8.

Looks like I've got 2 choices. IF this was your car, what would you do??

Option 1: Replace the -8 all the way from the tank and increase hose-diameter to accommodate -10an through the pre-filter and to the pump? The new pump has a -8an output, so the remainder of my current fuel system will fit right in. Doing this, I would have to find a pre-filter that has a -10an in/out. The one Holley recommended (162-564) has a -8an in/out. (*confused*)

Option 2: Get an adapter to allow my current hose set up from the tank to adapt to the -10an input on the new pump? The new pump has the same bolt-pattern to mount into my car as the 12-700 has. I'm thinking the increase from -8an to -10an at the pump would allow for more fuel, better cooling?

I'm about to take a 300 mile trip after I replace the fuel pump, I don't need to burn out the fuel pump when I'm 100 miles away from home so quick.

Thanks for your help/input in advance!

Re: Fuel Pump/Lines and Fittings

I would just use some adapters. -10 AN is crazy big for a fuel system. Even -8 is overkill for most builds.

Zackly. 10-AN is the size of heater hose. Iunno how much power you're trying to support, but, ... somehow I don't think there's any cheeeeezzze at the end of the maze you'll run by installing that in your car.

What's the size of the smallest fitting your fuel has to go through? (I'm gonna bet it's either the carb inlet or if you have swapped to EFI the fuel rail) Whatever size that is, unless your car (and fuel line) is like HUNDREDS of feet long, a size any larger than that isn't gonna make any noticeable difference.

Thank you for the response, i've got 600ish hp at the flywheel (492 wheel). Nothing extravagant! I mean, the outlet at the pump is -8....what's the point of going into the pump at -10 if the outlet is only -8? Makes me feel better, i think i'll just stick with the adapter to size up my current set up to match the new pump.

For what it's worth. I'm making north of 600hp at the crank and can supply 60psi at 7200 rpm with -6an.

Re: Fuel Pump/Lines and Fittings

Sumps on fuel cells are often -10. Probably why the pump is set up for that.
