Twin Turbo 305 Planning
Hello all,
Vehicle is an 88 Formula with the TBI 305.
The general build idea is as follows:
- Stock bottom end
- Stock heads with upgraded springs and port job
- Summit 8800 cam
- Edelbrock performer intake with EGR
- Headers
- Twin 45mm (ish) turbos Front Mounted
- No intercooler (yet)
- Holley Sniper or similar
- 5200 max rpm.
The goal is 300-350hp at the wheels while still being fuel efficient when cruising. I get 25 mpg on the highway the way it is now.
Yes, I have considered 350 swaps, among many other things. I will eventually build a 350 for this car, but there's probably a solid 75K miles left on this motor before I really need to worry about replacing it.
I already have the cam/springs/intake as I was going to do that anyway, the FI upgrade is purely because it will actually be less expensive to go with the sniper kit, fuel pump and all, than it will be for me to find someone that can actually tune my car with properly. I am in Canada by the way.
I figure why not consider turbos if I'm going this far, and I believe they will suit what I want out of the car, which is efficient cruising, better high rpm horsepower while still keeping the 700r4 alive. This will also be cool as @#$& and fairly unique, which I appreciate.
So what I'm looking for is turbo recommendations and things to consider regarding installing this system.
Will I need to lower the compression?
Will it be possible to run this on 87?
How do the snipers run with non-intercooled boost?
Will it be necessary to upgrade the radiator and/or fans?
Best way to feed the turbos with oil?
Replacement turbos for a 3.5 ecoboost seem to available for a bit over $1000.00. Likewise with pairs of turbos meant for industrial diesels. Perhaps these are Chinese made replacements? Is that stuff reliable these days?
I'd rather not get junkyard turbos, as I am well aware of how people abuse turbocharged vehicles. Perhaps refurbished sets would be good.
I'm sure there's lots more to consider so please chime in.
If anyone has good photos or other documentation on twin turbo sbc builds, that will be useful.
Cheers,
O

I think most of your questions' answers depend on how you're going to use it. IOW, how much of the time will you be using the turbos? If it's occasional boosting while accelerating; quick, short burst, combined with mostly off-boost driving, then you can get away with a lot; cheap turbos, stock cooling/compression, JY parts, etc. Conversely if you're tracking the car, towing boats up mountains, etc, that strategy won't work or last very long.
