intermittent starting issue

92 rs 305tbi, randomly some days will not start then it will a hour later, I hear fuel pump and have power to the dash but the starter/ignition doesnt even try. i see stuff about vats but not a clear direction to remove it or possibly the ignition rod/cylinder? any tips would be appreciated.

I don't think it's CRANKING.....

OP can you confirm that it won't crank when the problem is happening? If that is the case, I'd get a test light or DVOM and start at the starter and work my way back through the starting circuit. It could be as simple as a corroded ring connector on the starter.

Does the car actually have VATS? If so, do 3rd gens have a "Security" light on the dash? If so, what's that light doing when you have the key in/turned to the "run" position?

yea it wont event try to. i hear the fuel pump have power everywhere but when turn the key nothing happens. CEL and Security light will be on. replaced starter other day because I figured that was the issue but looking into it more it seems like the vats system or the wires inside the column are the issue.... i went ahead and ordered the resistor kit off ebay to just bypass the vats system so if that doesnt work reliably i know its probably something else. it cranks when hot, cold etc but its just at random when it does this issue.

Re: intermittent starting issue

Here is a quick read to clarify the value of the "SECURITY" light...and thus, the likely hood of YOUR issue being a VATS issue, or something else:
