I want to upgrade my camshaft to have some chop. I’ve finally decided on building the motor. But I have the stock valve train but do I have to upgrade that before putting in a better cam? I want some decent chop but I have no clue what I’m looking for and stufff. I am still pretty new to modifying cars and stuff like that

Yes, definitely...
Do you want chop, or do you want the car to be as efficient or fast as possible?
If you just want the sound, that's fine. But engine design is all about managing tradeoffs and matching parts as well as possible. The cam is just part of it.

Well I want some chop and some performance outta the cam and what corresponding parts would I need to get for said cam?

Put some decent compression into the motor and throw a comp cams thumper cam in there. You'll need a spring kit. If you are running iron heads you'll want to pull the stock rocker studs out and use screw in studs, You'll also need a converter and or rear gears, possibly injectors or crank up the fuel pressure, you'll need a tune.Originally Posted by Jacobvanhorn

Next thing would be your transmission and what condition it's in, the th700r4 and T5 aren't exactly the strongest but can be made to work. Those are just a few things I can think of
