harsh vibration

I have an 86 Firebird with the 2.8l with manual trans, have a really harsh vibration the whole body shakes and rattles really bad starting at 2200rpms and up but goes away around 5500, does not matter if vehicle is under load, on decel, clutch in or out. Tried power braking to check motor mounts and they don't have a lot of flex. Recently bought vehicle that was sitting in a barn for 7+ years, had to replace entire ign system and clutch to get vehicle going again. any ideas on what may be causing the shake?

Re: harsh vibration

Probably something with the clutch if the whole body vibrates-clutch is only item heavy enough to cause that severe of vibration.A missing or very bad pilot bushing/bearing could cause that, but only when clutch disc is rotating...Engine runs good otherwise-no miss or odd exhaust sound?

no miss power is fine, replaced the flywheel and pilot bushing with the clutch, happens both with and without clutch pedal pushed in as well. Possible I got a bad flywheel? no dings didnt look damaged in any way. it did have this issue slightly before replacing the clutch assembly which is part of the reason it was replaced. Is it possible that it could be the mounts still if they dont flex like they are worn?

Yes, It could be a flywheel issue.... Or, have you checked to see if the harmonic damper has slipped?

You mention the issue as happening before you replaced the clutch/flywheel but to a lesser degree. You mention regularly hitting 5500 RPM with it. The HD may have been beginning to slip before, and then your later excursions into ludicrous speed may have finally, completely done it in.

When good Harmonic Dampers go bad....

Okay i will look at it, do not normally hit those higher rpms, was driving the vehicle multiple different ways and conditions to see if the issue worsens or improves under certain load ranges ect. I appreciate the ideas.

Re: harsh vibration

If it's only when driving it's the U-joints. You can pick them up for 15-20$ a pop
Goodluck to you brother ✊
