350 or 305?

Tomorrow I am going to look at a 85 z-28. I was wondering if there is an easy way to tell if the engine is a 350 or a 305. The owner says it is a 350 and has a carb, and some edelbrock performance parts (performer intake and cam), flowmasters and an MSD ignition. I know that the camaro never came with the 350/ 5 speed combo, but the engine apparently is either new or recently rebuilt, so its possible the conversion was done. I'm not sure if the guy is full of bs, or honestly doesn't know. I have only talked to this guy on the phone once, so i don't know him at all.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. is 14mpg in city driving good, bad or average?

If he has no reciepts it's a 305. 14mpg is not great, but not terrible.

If the motor is original and rebuilt, it's not a 350. 85 Camaro's didn't have 350's in them. At least I don't recall that they did.

The only sure way is to check the block numbers to be sure.

The guy I bought mine from told me it was a 350 and coulden't come up with any recipts. I pulled it last year to read: 5.0L GM on the valley. Go figure, now she's set with a GMPP 350 crate engine. If you don't have the recipts you can check the #'s behind the alt on the pass. side head. You can usually run them to see (ex. 71-73 Chevelle, 350c.i.) or something.

Or get behind the driver side head with a flashlight, to where the casting numbers are on the block. It may have 5.0 or 5.7 written there.

why don't you call him on the phone and get him to tell you the block number

then go here: http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

and check the number he gives you

This way you won't waste your time and if you get there and he lied then you know not to buy the car
