Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
Went to change my serp belt and noticed fuel lines are running through the belt, making it not possible to remove belt or install new one. Car’s an 87’ 305 but someone switched it to a serp system at some point.
Is it possible to just adjust and reroute the metal lines somewhere else to the manifold or do I need to replace. And what is the correct location there suppose to run?
[makes pistol shooting motion into the front of underwear] Dammit, missed, all I got was the little one hanging down on the left [makes another similar shooting motion] Dammit, missed again, all I got was the little one on the right this time [yet another shooting motion] Ahhh, finally got that big one in the middle
I'd suggest checking the used parts places for those lines off of 88-up cars.
Da fark?!? I’d be so mad 😡 anyway hope you can snag those eBay lines. My only suggestion would be to bend your own from some universal line. Rock auto has some but not everyone is handy with a tubing bender. Good luck op!
Thanks for the input, I’ve been trying to find a local parts car to pull one off of. I’m up in PA and have had little luck.
if I try bending and making my own, by the looks of it one of the lines is slightly smaller than the other. Does anyone know the proper size for the other line 1/4? And what fitting sizes are needed?
Might be a dumb question but I see the two different sizes for an6 fittings to change over but would the braided hose also need to match and be the same as the fitting? Just trying to get all parts ordered probably to switch over to an6 and braided lines
Not sure about "2 different sizes". Please explain.
The number is the approximate inner diameter of the line, in 1/16"s. Not exactly, butt close.
Yes, in general, the fitting size has to match the line size. Furthermore, different line types, often require specific fittings; PTFE line for example. Butt any 6-AN fitting must fit to any other, regardless of their brand. After all, that's what those specs were originated for; they're an old military spec (AN = Army Navy) from WW2 or before, to standardize everything, so that it would be as interchangeable as possible.
My mistake I was thinking the hose as specific sizes, didn’t understand that the hose itself is a size (6AN). I know the intial adapter fittings need to fit to go from metric to 6AN. I thought the hose diameter would also have to continue to match the SAE size.
The hardlines are 2 different sizes but once you adapt to -6an, all the hose will remain 6an.
Since it was brought up, -an lines are sized by 1/16" increments. So -6 is considered 3/8. -10 is 5/8", -16 is 1". Now, this number is supposed to equate to the similar ID measurement as OD tubing. So -6 is sized for 3/8 OD tubing and has a similar ID measurement. Thats why standard 3/8 rubber hose will slide over 3/8 OD tubing but -6an hose will not as its slightly smaller on the inside. The flare is 37 degrees and is also called JIC.
