Carb to efi questions

My current setup is a 350 with a holley 670 carb on an edelbrock intake with a mild cam. Was thinking about either a holley or a fi tech efi.

Is it just a strait swap or should I look into upgrading other things while I am doing this (intake, cam)

The car was originally a 305 tpi so it does still have the fuel pump for a fuel injection setup.

Thanks for any suggestions/tips

Re: Carb to efi questions

Do you have an in tank pump? I assume you don't w a aftermarket carb setup. But everyone knows how assumptions go. If your happy w your power then just do the efi swap. If not, you should do it all at once. The fitech stuff is pretty lacking. I have an old bronco that came w an go efi system. The interface is pretty lack luster and the tuning is just so-so. Ive had 2 edelbrock pro flow systems and they're far better in every way. The holley systems are in between. Regardless of the EFI system, you'll need a new fuel system. Either an in tank pump w filters and a regulator w a return or a sump system. All the systems either run on 43 or 58 psi. The systems that are a 4 barrel looking TB w injectors in it are OK(ish). The edelbrock multi port systems run awesome. All of these systems are tight under the hood. The pro flow systems w multi port and a carb style TB didn't fit under my stock TA hood. But it ran awesome. Now I have a pro flow XT that fits under my stock TA hood. The pro flow is more money than the others but comes w an ignition system and the others don't, plus it runs better. This winter I'm pulling the fitech off my bronco and installing a pro flow on the 302.

this is my pro flo xt system. I had it running for 2-3 yrs before the blower and it was great. It was also easy to upgrade to forced induction.

Re: Carb to efi questions

A Holley sniper is a direct bolt on and could be done in a long afternoon if your fuel pump can do 60 psi, or i'm not sure if the sniper will work at 42, a short weekend if you do it the right way with the hyperspark distributor and CDI. That will get you 98% of the way there. Port injection would be 99, and sequential would be 100 but now youre looking at serious investment. I run an 8 injector super sniper (old, discontinued) and its so bolt on that the machine shop was able to dyno the engine with their house 650 holley and a letter brand HEI i got off amazon. If i had to do it again, I would have gone sequential, but the outlay was north of $5k vs $1300 for the sniper. There's tons of support for tuning the holley too, which is probably more important than the product itself.

Re: Carb to efi questions

Just to clarify, the sniper systems i was referring to were the TBI units that sit on a carb manifold. The people i know w those have been pretty unhappy. The sniper units w the full sequential setups are a different deal. Im seeing less of those now that the TBI units are out. When my car was on the dyno last year. The tuners both felt that the better holley systems and the pro flow systems tuned well and pretty equally. The fitech was sub par according to them. One of them was an old fitech employee/tuner.

i feel like these $900 tbi systems are pretty lacking. They are advertised as an easy/inexpensive way to get into efi. They are less money. But you get what you pay for. Theres a reason the pro flow is 2k. Ive spent more time trying to work out the numerous issues w my broncos fitech unit in 8 months than w any of the pro flow systems in 20 yrs. Ill admit that some of the issues w the fitech was instal issues from the prior owner but I feel like its still a crap system.

Re: Carb to efi questions

2nd gen Holley Sniper has fixed the issues with the original sniper. You also need a robust fuel system with the pump in tank and run a return fuel line. All about keeping the fuel cool. I live in Az. so it's mandatory. EMI can be a problem also, so shielding and wire separation is a priority during installation.
