Cant Figure this one out

I have a 91 formula with the 305 (i know but i dont have the cash for the 350) anyway it has an open element air filter and an msd 6a with an accell super stock coil. car runs great but its a PITA to start. I have to crank it forever, then it will kick and try to start then sputter, idle down and die. after 2 or 3 times of this it will start, sputter then it will settle and run fine from then on and i dont see any power loss.......WTF??????? can anyone help?

When you turn the ignition switch to on do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds?

fuel pump sounds like its running fine and i just had that tested at a shop. they told me it had proper amp draw, pressure and volume. havent thought about looking at the security light but if the car is warmed up it doesnt have this problem. only happens when its cold

Is it carb or fuel injected? if carb, then it could be the choke. My choke dosen't work at all and my car starts pretty much the same way you described.

check the ignition box....sounds like the box may be set to retard a little far. if its at 0, then advance timing a few degrees.

stock, it doesn't have an ignition box. you said you had the MSD 6A, though. there should be a white dial on the side of it that has retard/advance. set this higher. this may be out of the ballpark, but try changing your fuel filter. it will take about 10 minutes, there might be a clog in there, and if not, then it couldn't hurt. its about 7 bucks at autozone
