help, choosing a engine

hey guys,
I'm checking out engine options, I was at a junk yard today and I found everything from what I thought was a 305 all the way up to a caddy 500. heres the deal where on the engine can I find the engine number so I can tell what it is. can someone post a picture with an arrow.
what cars came with 350's and were they more common with 2 bolts or 4 bolts. and will it bolt up to my tranny(700r4). there were alot of monte carl ss, and oldsmobile cutlas supreme's, and a regal or 2, which one should I be checking for my new engine.

Stay away from the late model Regal, Cutlass and Monte Carslo... They will have a 305 or a 307 engine only. Look for the 350 engine from a 92 or later caprice, roadmaster, or truck. Or just pluck one from a F-body. The LT1 block will work too... just remember that the heads use reverse cooling so they will be useless to you... unless you want some extra work.

Go here to check engine codes...

http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

The engine code is on the top of the block, behind the head, where the transmission bellhousing bolts on... left side (sometimes the block will say 5.0 or 5.7 to the right side)

Also note that GM changed the head design in 1987 and you must match the intake to the head

I'm looking for a direct replacement for my lg4(305 with a carb). what about a 350 out of a caddy. I know some olds came with 350's but which ones, and what is considered a late model, like 92-96?, because I'm looking at cars from the 80's. also my car is an 87 which was the last to get the lg4.

I had the LG4 in my car... why would you ever want a direct replacement for that p o s?

Stick with the chevrolet cars at the junkyard... Pontiac, Oldsmobile and others all had their own 350 block which is not the same as the chevy block.

For a regular engine I would pull a 350 from a pickup truck or van. Older trucks (1980 and older) came with a 350. Newer ones came with a 350 or a 305. Once you find the truck you can pull the number off the block and search that website I gave you.

go with that caddy 500! these are allways seen be the hotrod mags as "the most overlooked junkyard jewel" for many reasons, its a caddy engine so you know the car was allways babied by a grandma and grandpa its whole life so you know its going to be a good core, a 350 chevy out of a car has a good possibility of beting beat on, not to mention the 500 caddy had a whopping 450 HP and 550 ft.lbs of torque stone stock! there was a guy at the track i was talking to, he put a 500 caddy straight from the junkyard into his 86' el camino with nothing done to the car except true duel exhaust still threw the stock log manifolds and he was going 13.3's all day long, damn impressive if i do say so myself!

when I said direct replacement I meant I could drop a 350 into place of the 305 and use the same intake and headers, for now. the caddy 500 would be nice but my car is a comuter, so 3 gallons per mile won't cut it to me. it looks like either I'll try to find a truck engine or a caprice engine.
