Stroking A 305??????
the LG4 in my 87 trans am is going to need a rebuild by this and i was wondering how to build it into a stroker motor. i know that it could be done, but i am not clear on all the logisitics of it. i would like to have as much info as possible before i get into the build up so any help is greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

Theres really not much point. Its going to take alot of the following: time, money, effort.
Do you really want to do that with a 305? For less than what it would cost to have the block prepped for the crank, and to get the crank itself and different rods or pistons, you can get a good 350 block and have more cubes. And no clearancing BS. No special small base circle cams for any reason. No grinding rod bolt heads.
The only reasons I came up with to stroke a 305 is:
Keep a numbers matching block for show purposes
Keep a 305 block for **** retentive smog inspectors
Practice making a stroker motor out of a boat anchor for experience to build your planned 383.
Personally, I'd either pick up a 350, or build up the 305 you have and forget the stroker idea.

Damn, and I was all ready with the "why polish a turd" reply
If you're $$ limited, I can see the reasoning for rebuilding the original engine...no need to spend additional money on another block. But when you start getting past the "norm" for a rebuild and get into stroking, why limit yourself in cubic inches?
But if you must, do a search..there's more info on stroking on a 350 to 383 on this site than you'll ever get in reply to thisthread, and everything should still apply.
Ofcourse I still tweak and add on to my 235 I-6, but that's another story

that makes sense...i didnt realize that it was so much more involved than stroking a 350. i would like to retain the 305 just to be different, but i am not really familiar with what kinds of performance parts would work well on this engine (as opposed to a 350) i know that, while they are similar motors, what works great on a 350 wont necessarily yeild the same results on a 305. i am considering a high performance rebuild with the weiand 142 CID single carb street blower. what kind of power numbers would i be looking at with this setup??? and what other options are good for high power from a 305?? i want to stay away from nitrous b/c this a daily driver. thanks in advance for any and all help.

Its exactly the same amount of work as stroking a 350 to stroke a 305, and thats most of the problem people have with doing it. You do it to a 305, you get around 334, whereas with a 350 you get 383. I think its kinda obvious which setup will make more power, and with the same cam the 383 will idle better.
If it were a simple drop in deal, I'd say go ahead. Since you are planning on a sc, I wouldnt worry at all about stroking unless you just want to spend the extra 500 or so dollars on parts and clearance the block for the crank.
