This stupid belt is driving me crazy!!
The belt on my power steering resevoir started squeaking. But the problem is that the belt has always been loose, and never squeaked before. Recently I found an adjustment i didn't know was there and finally made the belt tighter than it has been for the past two years. Then it stopped squeaking for about a day and started again. so I went out and got some of that spray and that stopped the squeaking for about thirty seconds now it is making a nasty noise not the annoying squeak sound anymore I wonder if it is the bearings or just the resevoir gone bad. If it is bad how much does a new one cost and is it hard to replace?? Thanks
heh, well, if it's a v-belt and it's been on there 2 years, it probably needs replacing anyway (I'm guilty of doing the same thing tho')
Sometimes belts can get glazed and squeek.
When you said you made it tight, how tight are we talkin'? If you get it really tight, it puts stress on the pulley bearings, causing them to fail and make noise! I hope that isn't what happened. If they're real bad, you could probably tell from turning the pulley by hand with no belt and feeling for roughness or noise.
I've had belts do goofy things before. On my car at first, the belts kept stretching and I'd keep tightening over a period of several days. On occasion the belts would get thrown off. At some point, I put new ones on, set them to the right tension, then said screw it, I'm just gonna leave em like that. Those belts lasted years!! I only had to retighten them when my alternator stopped charging effectively
Anyway, too loose is better than too tight, but find a setting/technique that works for you. Guys would look at the belts on my car and be like man you really need to tighten them....when they had been going fine like that for months and months and, well, you get the idea.
