Need an engine rebuilder (in S.Ontario) who won't rip me off...
I’ve been searching about a month now for a reputable shop (who won’t rip me off) to rebuild my stock 305 TPI engine from my 89’ IROC Convertible, it has less then 130,000Km. Prices vary from $1600.00-$2500.00 to get my 305 freshen-up, or $3600.00-$5000.00 for a fresh 350. I’m leaning towards the 305 freshen-up at this point.
The problem is with the conflicting stories I hear no two shops are alike. One shop will replace the bearings whether they need it or not, another will inspect and make a judgement call. One shop will sonic test the block, the other doesn’t even mention it, etc, etc.
Then there are warranties; they vary from 3-months to 3-years. I store my car 7 months a year, what’s a 3-month warranty going to do for me if I don’t take the car out till May but have the work done in February.
I need recommendations from members who have gotten work done. What’s a good price to pay for a freshen-up and a fresh 350? What should I look out for? Who don’t you recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Try this guy...

Ask for Gord.
He built my 350 engine and heads, as well as a 396, 383, 350, and a 5.0 mustang engine for my friends and we have had no problems.
Of all the people who have ever worked on my cars he is the only person I would refer someone to.
Either stock engine should be less than $2500, including re and re. 350 parts are the same cost as 305 parts... why the big difference? If you bought all the parts I can't see him charging more than $1500... unless the engine is completely screwed.

I've called up Gord a couple of times and i'm leaning towards getting him to work on the car. He seems to be an upfront guy. I just want to visit his shop and meet him in person.
He gave me some pricing over the phone and they seem reasonable. I just want to talk to him face to face and see if i can get the work done within my budget of $2400.00.
There is another shop in Toronto called Crosstown Auto who have a better warranty, 3-year 60,000Km. There labor rate is a bit cheaper but the cost of the engine work is the same. I want to visit both shops and see the equipment they use, see what they're working on at the moment, and get a general vibe from the place. I go on instinct as much as i do price, warranty and customer service!
