What temp should I set the eletric fan to come on??

I finnaly got the electric fan all wired up and the switch is Installed correctly (lame insrtuctions). This is a stand alone single electric fan from an 89 firebird lo3 and im using an adjustable thermostat switch. My car has a 180* thermostat and was running at the quarter mark on the gauge with the clutch fan. The question is should I set the fan switch to 180* so it comes on when the thermostat opens, or should I set it above or below the thermostat opening point??

Thanks!

you don't really want the Tstat opening and closing

in normal op. Set it for about 190. It will probably run until about 175 and then turn off. The tstat should not start to close at that point if it does..

It kind of depends on how fast the temp changes with the fan cycling.

Mine will move 10 degrees in about 20seconds easy (up or down depending on if the fan is running and your sitting at a light or not).

It also kind of depends on your carb setup. if the carb is the slightest bit rich.. the motor will be happier when idling if its a little warmer. You should see what happens to my idle quality as the temp heads below 180.

Personnaly I would run the switch in side the cockpit and wire to where you can turn it of and on at will. It always gave me an added security that my fan was accutally working. I hated watching the temp gauge while dring and just waiting for 220 to come around and freak out when it would go past or just sit there.

Manual switch made me alot saner person while driving

I say have a manual switch as well. Just make sure to get in the habit of remembering.

the problem with a manual switch is that your brother or someone will drive your car and not know it's there.

Yea I'm making it its own system because I dont want my wife to kill the car, but dont tell her that I dont have faith Shiz happens I could forget also. The nice feature about the thermostat switch is it can be set to come on with the car so if the thermostat part breaks in the middle of no where I just turn the dial and the fan comes on just like a switch mounted inside the car. I guess I'll set it around 190* unless anyone else has another suggestion.

Thanks guys!
