rear-end gears
rear-end gears
Ok guys...Ive got an 88 camaro with that ever so horrible 2.73, I would like to go to a 3.73 and yes I know this will make my gas mileage worse but thats not what I bought my camaro for.anyways, do you know what i need to look for?i know there is specific 3.73's for specific rear ends....and i dont know exactly what mine is so i dont know exactly what to look for.

first off why do you want 3.73's. Unless you engine loves the higher rpm range (power range of 2000-5500 or even more drastic) you don't need them. 3.42's will probably be much more suitable and you will still have decent gas mileage. Our trannys have sufficient gear ratios so that we wouldn't really need high final ratios (for stock or light moded cars anyway). But if you insist....jegs part # 836-49-0007-1. Its the Richmond ring and pinion set for 3.08 and numerically lower carrier.
I agree, from what i read over the past year on this board go w/3.42. In that time i have heard many people complain aboutt how Richmond gears whine. I don't have first hand knowledge of tthis but look at the old posts and you'll. see

How do you quote everyone? Everyone makes a PERFECT point. I went from 2:73s to 3:73s and didn't gain anything in the 1/4. I picked up a 1/10 but that was probably due to the cat-back. My motor doesn't make power past 3500 rpms which I later discovered. Just make sure your car will make power in the upper rpms ranges.

3.42 gears are awesome plus my gas mileage only went from 28 down to 26 with my current mods. I wouldn't want any higher gear to run on the interstate. 3.42 is a great all around gear.

Well, I don't mind being of different opinion than everyone else, but I'm real happy with 3.73's.
True, if your motor's power curve drops off before 4500rpm, forget it.But if your motor pulls up to 5500 or 6000 rpm, you'll love the 3.73's.

Ok well, I have a 1990 L98 350 with the TBI from my old 305 on there. So Im not really sure of where the power curve and where it begins and ends. All i know is that 2.73 is not the gearing to have. If you could tell me,what is my rear end exactly called? I dont want to get the wrong gear for the wrong rear end. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a 7.625" Ring Geared 10 bolt GM rear.
That should be enough info to buy gears.
Tell them what gear you have now as that'll give them the carrier series.
