I checked the archives for information on a performance coil that would work well on my 1990 L98 Formula and didn't find many answers. (If I missed something obvious on the site I apologize.)
I wish to replace the in-cap unit with a hotter one and did manage to find an Accel called "Brute Power" (if memory serves). I am wondering if this one has been tried by anyone here on 3G.org. If not, what would be a good replacement in-cap coil? I am trying to keep the factory underhood appearance where possible, even though the engine will see some moderate upgrades in the coming year (runners, TB, porting, cam, exhaust, etc.)
Any and all help appreciated.

hypertech is my recomendation. stock isn't an in cap either though on a 1990.
staring at the coil which sat dutifully in its mount on the starboard side of the TPI, I asked myself, "When was the last time you did anything to this car?"
At any rate, thanks for the wakeup call zippy. I saw it is the dual connector red/white wired coil. Jegs shows the 4054 for my ride.

An MSD or an Accel coil woudlnt't be a bad choice either. But then again... what's wrong with the stock coil ?? LOL

). It sparks at the front base of it, so I need new one, I was thinking of getting MSD GM coil, anyone hear bad of it?Quote:

I had thought that the stocker would cost a TPI car spark energy in the upper rpms, and with an AFPR coming soon I figured now would be a good time to do the easy mods.Originally posted by Blackened

FWIW the Crane HI-6 comes with an LX92 coil for under $200 in Jeg's, plus the $26 for the harness. I need to research the output on that coil first, but it's an idea...

i wouldn't recomend adding an ignition amplifier to your car. for a fairly stock engine you'd be spending alot of money for not much difference not to mention adding alot more possibility for failure by adding more parts. just using a good coil with good wires, cap, rotor, and plugs you'll be just fine.

I guess I saw the price of the ignition with the coil and thought I might be killing two birds with the same rock if I jumped now. Come to think, since I am still running a stock cap and rotor, maybe the Hyper kit will do the trick. I gave the car new plug wires and plugs about four months ago (and yes, replaced the coil wire out on the intake hahaha).Originally posted by zippy

I spent $71.95 for the <A HREF="http://www.hypertech-inc.com/">Hyper Tech</A> cap/coil/rotor combo for my 86 T/A. First it took 15 minutes to install it. At 53K volts it puts out 8K more than MSD and 16K more than the stock 37K.
When you combine this with a good set of MSD wires or comparable it allows you to open the spark plug gap to about .50" and cut back the ground electrode like this:l

By exposing more spark to your fuel mixture you actually get a win/win/win situation. You burn more of the mixture and spend less unburnt fuel in your exhaust so you get:
More Power
Less Emissions
Better Gas Mileage
To me that's a benefit even for a stock engine. I don't know if they make this combo for your car but it would be a good investment. I got mine from Summit Racing

D.U.I. makes very good ignition products, they advertise in ford magazines. But they make products for everything. I am not sure if they have a website,but if you call them they will ship you a free catalog. (901)396-5782.

I see Hyper has a kit, and I have new Bosch wires/Delco plugs (well, four months old) so regapping and cutting back on the electrode a bit after upgrading sounds like a worthwhile way to burn a couple of hours. I know gapping up helped when I put a 6AL on my (65) Skylark...
It's good to know the HEI only needs a little help as opposed to an add-on box to work well.

no problem ken. by the way mikeinaz, very good reply. some don't see that part of the higher output coil.
I have regapped before but not modded plugs.
