What kind of flywheel with a 400 ?
I plan on using a T-5 from an 89 IROC with my new 400 shortblock. What kind of flywheel should I Get ? One from an early 70's pickup truck with a manual tranny ? I'm looking for a stock type flywheel not a $300 dollar aftermarket one.
Externally balanced means that the crank must be balanced with the flywheel and balancer by a proffesional machine shop. You did balance your 400 like this, didn't you? Common but costly mistake.

hey-you dont have to use a 400 flywheel with your 400-any good balance shop can re-balance the flywheel off of any small block to match the imbalance required by the 400. if converting from an automatic provide the flexplate currently in use and they can balance match the 2 so as not to upset the balance job(if any) performed when you were first building the motor. try this too-take your new clutch pressure plate and disc to the balance shop with the flywheel tell em you want a zero balance job on the clutch. the amount of unwanted imbalance present in most pressure plates especially diafphram (spell) can be up to 35 grams pretty much throws the nice job done by your machine shop right out the window, huh

Yes. I have had it done on three different engines now, and they all came out fine. What "grumpygreaseape" said is correct.
