I'm just getting ready to bolt on a set of heads and wanna know if I should use thread lock or never seize or anything like that on them. Any suggestions would help.

Incase anyone was wondering, I meant on the Head bolts themselves

 

I have never used anything on them except oil. I have read to never use anything except oil. Make sure the bolt hole threads are clean also. This is the best way to get an accurate torque reading.

 

john you must be reading about fords because just about everything if not everything says to use non hardening sealer on SBC head bolts, i use liquid tefelon pipe sealer

 

I agree, teflon sealer like ARP markets [probably regular pipe sealer] with a higher price. Otherwise whats to stop water leaks?

 

Just a tip I learned from work. Using never-sieze can increase torque values up to 30 percent. If anything just use some light oil.

 

Use only oil ? What is going to keep water from seeping around the bolt threads ? Just re-read your post,think I misunderstood the question.

 

Like ede said, DO NOT use oil!!! The bolts go directly into the water jacket. Use non-hardening thread sealer on the threads, such as Loctite PST (pipe sealer with Teflon) or Permatex 300 (brown gooey goop). Also, DO NOT use silicone, it will leak every time.

 

I was starting to get upset there for a minute. You guys are right. Oil is suppose to be used on rod, and main bolts/studs. Sealer is to be used on the head bolts/studs. It is amazing what you THINK you read in a magazine, even after your 4th time through!!
