DOH! Good Ol' GM Starter
My starter completely crapped out on me today... I will be attempting to swap it out tomarrow. Any advice or heads up on what to expect and tips that might make the swap a little easier. Besides the normal, use a lift or jackstands, yadda yadda yadda, any tips to make it as painless as possible? Ive never changed one on an F-Body. If it makes a differece, i have a 92 Z28 305 TPI with the single cat exhaust. Anyone got some tips for me? :lala: Supreme Member

Buy 2 of them so you dont have to make 2 trips to auto store.
Ah I just say that, I'm on my 4th one inside of 1 year, all malfunctions were different on each one.
AS for a tip, its pretty straight forward getting it out, but I would drop the starter first then take the wires off, was eaiser for me that way. Also mine came out with just enough room, Y pipe was right under it, so had to twist and turn it to get it out.
Putting it in is same as getting it out just reversed. But lining it up can be a little tricky. The bolt holes in the starter are slightly bigger than the bolts, so it can be cocked just a little bit and cause the starter to be misaligned, which in some cases the starter will not work correctly. I just moved it around a little bit till it was right. And you will probably need to use some shims on either or both sides to get the starter gear aligned with the flywheel. Also my starter was the old 2 bolt starter, which makes it a little harder to align than the nice 3 bolt starters.
One more tip, when you get it in, just bump the ignition and listen to what it sounds like, any harsh grinding noies means that there is probably a problem with alignment.
