What's your emissions level-of-pain?

Since the issue often comes up (TPI or TBI to carb, CC to non-CC, headers, what cam, eliminating cat, eliminating A.I.R., eliminating EGR, no cross-over passages, etc., etc., etc.), thought it might be valuable to find out what percentage of us actually have to worry about it, and to what degree.

To my knowledge, we don't have emissions here at all.

five7, Silly me, I forgot to say that I'm from Ohio. Cleveland, Columbus, Akron, and Cincy all have emissions AFAIK

No emission checks here in Alabama, but we all obey the environmental laws anyway .

We have all of the above up here in Portland, Oregon. Not that it matters. I'm due to pass in a couple months, and i'm running about 9 times the amount of hydrocarbons i'm suppose to have! HA

Arizona is stiff but EASILY cheated I used to work for em so I know thier whole shpeel. Visual check for 3 check valves and connected hoses, on check vavle per header/manifold and one check valve down to the cat. Other than that anything goes.....such as no EGR and such. Also a dyno/sniffer....not hard to pass with a carb, especially since my GF's camaro has an edle. 600 on it and I just swap it onto my Grand PRix and Firebird when its time to go...cuz edlebrocks were practically MADE for passing muscle car's through emissions Vacuum leak helps too.....as does retarding the timing to the point of glowing red headers....Emissions is still a bitch even tho its easy to cheat however.

We have to put all that pointless BS here in CA. The only way my old '87 LG4 formula passed was because i had a friend at a dealership who hooked me up with smog certs. Sucks because he doesn't work there no more so my 2 rides have to comply with all that stuff. It also means i'm gonna have to work within the limits of the tpi system because as far as i know none of the aftermarket tpi intakes, or a custom LT1 intake, are smog legal (EGR), and i have a very limited and expensive selection of smog-legal headers to choose from. If they want to have clean-running cars, they should just do a sniffer test. Ultimately, its what goes out the tailpipe that really matters............

In my area there is no emissions (Northern Neck, Virginia). That being said, I'm concerned about emissions because I believe that at some point the Liberal Eviromentalists will force it throughout Virginia. With that in mind I try to keep all of my cars in lock step with the emission areas of Virginia so that when the hammer falls I won't get hit.

It is only in certin countys here in texas. My county is due next year to be under the choping block of the epa man. It really sucks to have the eimssions tester at the airport and about a mile down wind of one of the largest eastman/kodac plants in the country . The tester is about 3 miles out of town. total bull shizat, o well I know people that will pass me and if not I will retard the timing and create one heck of a vacuum leak

Los Angeles Basin. You guess.

As for legal TPI stuff, the Superram is legal here, they have an EO number. PLEASE keep in mind even though you have stickers, if the car does not pass the sniffer check, you will fail. Its for visual only.

That said, if they dont see it and you pass the sniffer, you pass the test as well Keep that in mind too.

At home in my county they have the sniffer, gas cap, visual and dyno. Same state where I go to school in that county no emissions at all.

I have heard that 12 counties in northern Indiana have them, but not in mine. I don't look for them to finish off the state anytime soon. There are too many farmers that would go under trying to get their highway trucks to comply. And if they did find a little way around them, I would be talking to the same people.

Smog Pump

I've been thinking about taking the Air pump off the belt & hooking it to an electric motor and tucking it away somewhere under the hood. With a switch on the dash and a tube into to the exaust, I could turn it on and dump large amounts of fresh air into the tail pipe, lowering the percent of hydro-carbs & CO1.

Same. I have had them actually finger test my EGR (4bbl days ) but they're usually pretty sane.

Wish I could find my scan of my 86's test when it was last tested. They listed it as 5700cc LOL... I can't help but stand there while they test it and smile like a freak and I think they get nervous and wonder what the hell is in it w/ that lope

You're right. That's what I had in San Diego b/4 moving to Colorado - visual, EGR functional, sniffer.

Too late to modify, I guess.

I'm finding these results interesting. I expected a much higher percentage of no inspections/testing than this - more like >50%. Although this isn't a "scientific" poll, it is indicative of the demographics of our country, that population tends to be concentrated. It isn't hard to see why we have air quality problems - whether the measures taken make sense is another topic...
