cheap 383 crank
cheap 383 crank
I was looking at ebay today and saw some prices too good to be true. Is there a catch to these auctions and would the parts work in a 1992 350 tpi motor?

these parts ofter get thrown up on boards and from what everyone has said any my own observations they are not worth it, the cranks have a nice price, but the tolerances are horrible and they require extensive machineing to get them in balance, the companys to avoid are any product made by CAT or PROWLER there both made in china by prison inmates! also with the rods same problem in the holes are not perfectly round and over all just like most all car parts like the fram commericals, "pay a little more not, or ALOT more later" any car part if you want quility make sure its made in the good ol' USA,......also if you need a cheap setup i have a 400 crank, balancer and flexplate you can have all for 300$ its the 2-piece main tho so you will have to use the older block.
I had a run in with Dirt Track Thunder last year. I won a Prowler forged crank 3.75", 5.7" rods, and 8.6:1 Speed Pro pistons from him on ebay (seperate items for bid).
Tony, the owner, said that the crank is balanced for 6" rods and a light piston. I asked if this crank would work with a 5.7" rods and piston combo. He said that he has not tried that combo, but didn't see a reason why it wouldn't work. I got the impression that it would work.
After I get the rotating assembly, it needed Molly metal to balance out (an extra $100). I brought this up to Tony, and he gets very defensive and said that the Prowler 3.75" crank with 5.7" rods wouldn't work and that the counter weights of the crank would hit the pistons (I measured 0.100" clearance).
He changed his tune very abruptly once I presented a problem. It was no big deal, but I felt that he didn't stand behind his words very well.
The Prowler crank appeared to be a quality unit. All the journals were within spec (0.0002, that is 2 ten thousandths, difference). It had zero bend (checked with a dial indicator).
When the machine shop balanced the crank, they said it looked like a great crank.
I'll be running the crank here soon, so we will see...
If these items were total junk, I don't see why Dirt Track Thunder would buy 'em, use 'em, and sell 'em. It would be bad business.

You can get a SCAT Series 9000 cast stroker crank(good to about 500hp)for around $250. or the lightweight version for about $350. I have used both with minimal balancing and no problems.
