will not start when cold

When it is cold out the car will not fire. It is an 85 T/A TPI it tries to fire and then stalls out. It seems like it runs out of fuel It seems like the fuel pump is not pumping enough fuel. Would cold weather make a difference. Even if you push on the gas it still stalls out like it ran out of fuel. Is there any way to check the cold start valve? When the car is warm the problem goes away and it has full throtle.

i have a similar problem occasionally. I was bouncing some ideas off my friend and we arrived at the conclusion that it could possibly be a problem w/ low oil pressure on start up. The computer will run the pump for 2 seconds and then cut it if it sees inadiquate or no pressure at the oil pressure switch. (I think the tpi's have em) Hence, the car will start and then abruptly stall. Just a thought...

fuel injectors or fuel pump may be loosing pressure after sitting for a few hours. if this is the case, isolate the faulty components and replace them.

standard test on fuel pump leakdown is to hook a fuel pressure guage up to the schrader valve on the fuel rail, engage fuel pump for a few seconds, and watch how fast the pressure leaks down. check your vehicles shop manual for specifics.

there are special tools for testing the injectors, don't forget the stock tpi system is batch fired. also take a look at the pressure regulator, if you can see gas in the vacuum line, the regulator has definetly failed.

fuel pump on thirdgens is no fun to change, rear axle & exhaust system have to be removed before the tank removal can begin.

I have decided it is not the fuel pump and injectors as soon as the car hits a certin temp is runs fine (when the water temp is about 150). I think it is the cold start valve but I'm not sure. Any more help would be appreciated.

cold start valve only is active for a very short period when ignition key is in the start position and the starter is cranking. when key is released to run position, cold start valve is not powered.

check for vacuum leaks. they will cause a hard start and rough idling. rubber hoses are likely cracked and brittle if still original. tpi gaskets may well leak. try shooting some carberator cleaner around the manifold while the car is idling. if idle changes noticeably, you've found a vacuum leak.

check ignition system too. weak ignition coil, old plug wires, worn spark plugs, worn cap & rotor will also cause problems.

if you go the autozone route, be very careful with their red "double silicone" spark plug wires. i've had a couple sets cause misfiring right out of the box.

does the "service engine soon" light come on? are you getting any error codes?

I found a vacume line off about a week ago now the car runs good when warm vs. not running well anytime. Now the car doesn't want to start. To keep the car running at start up i need to play with the pedel if i let off the pedel it will stall if i push the pedel down too far it will hesitate and run bad and sometimes will also stall. As soon as the car warms up it is like a whole new car it runs great. I can turn rhe car off and start it again with no problem. It holds a steady Rpm and runs virtualy perfect.

Up until i foun the vacume leak the engine light was on. As soon as i put the hose back in the ligh has stayed off even when it is cold and running bad.
