Engine runs after turned off... WTF??!?

Hey guys... so i ran a couple errands this morning in my 85 T/A, pulled into a parking spot and turned the car off, pulled the key out of the ignition... It sputtered once or twice and then died, i'm like "Wait, the key was in my hand, what was that?" So i didn't really think much of it... Tried to start it, needed to give it a little bit of gas. (carbeurated)

So i pull into another spot, turn the car off, take the key out, and it sputters repetatively, as if the fuel had been shut off but there was still spark... it lasted so long i had time to put the key back into the ignition, depress the clutch and turn it to the "on" position--- At which point it caught and began running normally again.

I turned the car on and off a few more times, but it didn't do it again.

So my question to you guys is WTF is going on???? haha.

Thanks

Could be that you're idling too high. My car was doing that when I had the idle set higher because it wasn't wanting to stay running for some reason. Once I turned the idle screw a few times, it shut off normally.

Ok. Do you think this may have something to do with outside temperature aswell??? I've been running the car in cold Massachusetts for the past few weeks-- Just brought it down to sunny humid Florida. Think that the extra heat & humidity is making the previously correct idle too high now??

Could be because I had to correct mine for a week or two of some cold weather we had here (north texas). After the weather got better and temperatures rose, it started the problem that you have. Just lower the idle some and it should fix your problem.

you have what is known as 'deiseling'. this basically means that your engine is hot enough to detanate gas or oil from blow by and continue to run on it's own without spark. check your timing ( determines when and how much combustion pressure you have when you turn your car off) and let your car idle for 5 sec when you get somewhere.

True, If your running a fair amount of advance and quality of your fuel is poor this will happen. Dump some water remover/ fuel line antifreeze in the tank and see if it helps, next time get your fuel from another source or get a higher octaine. You could also cure this by dropping the timing down a couple *.

try kicking the engine down before you shut it off, this will also sometimes help to drop the idle before you shut it off. just look at the tach before you shut it off.. on my car it will usually shut off anywhere around 600 and lower rpm w/o running on

My car did that too, I just swapped out the diesel for a gasoline engine.
