I have 2 dead thirdgens...
This sucks.
Earlier this week, my dad finally put all the finishing touches on my sisters 87 Camaro SC 2.8L V6. We put a 'new' engine in it which came from a local junk yard. He drove it to work a few days and it seemed fine, so he let my sister start driving it. That very same day, she calls me on my cel phone and says 'Ward, my car is making a funny noise.' So I came home and looked at it, and the funny noise was a rod knocking. So it needs a new motor. Then, earlier today I was driving my car, and I noticed it took off a little slow. Then I realized it wouldnt shift into overdrive. Then it decided to slip into neutral whenever it felt like it. It acts like tis low on fluid, but its not. It will not stay in drive, it will go for a little bit, then it will jsut rev like its in neutral. This tranny only has 20,000 miles on it.
Anyways, this sucks really bad. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds pretty simple to me.....
You need another engine in the SC....I would suggest cutting your loses and just getting a GM crate motor..maybe step up to a 3.1 for a little more power.
On the trans issue.....
If its under warranty, take it back.
If its not, sounds like you need to take it in and have it fixed.

Sounds like time for another 2.8! Those engines suck in my opinion. THey are much better in front wheel drive form, an da bit worse in the S-10 trucks (I own one!). See if they offer any sort of warranty at the yard where you purchased the engine.
As for the trans, you have something bad in there. If you still have first and second, I'd say the 3-4 clutch pack is gone, which is very common, just look around on the trans board.

Eh; I've got 230,000 miles on my 2.8, and still counting; so they all can't be that bad!
Did you guys do anything to the 2.8, or did you just drop it in? "We" lost the 2.8 on the following webpage, due to the owner hearing a noise that he thought was a valve- he thinks later it was an exhaust leak. Too bad he didn't wait for me to come over before junking the car.

THere not all that bad, just the one in my truck doesn't have hardly any power, so I'm gonna replace it with the LG4 from my Camaro when I get the 350 in there. I need to get myself in gear and get that thing finished!
As for the durability of 2.8's (and 3.1's), I guess I've seen the bad side of the picture. I've replaced many intake gaskets, head gaskets, and complete engines that fail from coolant going into the oil when one of the above occurs. I just had a 3.1 out a couple weeks ago for a problem that I've never seen from one of the engines though, it had a wiped cam!
I guess I just long for the torque from a V-8 in the truck!
