i think i have a timing problem....please help

ok when you set timing do you need to unplug something so the distributor is free from the computer....i heard this somewhere....cuz i just tried messing with my timing the other day and now my car is slow as sin.....its got torque....kicks on everyshift...but it WONT go past 4,000 RPM's it just barely gets there and there is NO pull what so ever......hmm....maybe my cat is clogged
i'll post this on the exhaust board too to find out

but any info would help.....im goin to the strip this weekend and i would like my car to run good!!

thanks

Matt,

Your '84 should have an EST control, but according to my diagrams there may not be a bypass connector. In your case, you may have to insert a jumper between the 'A' and 'B' terminals of the ALDL to bypass the EST to set the base timing. Refer to the VECI label under the hood for certainty.

I'd suggest the stock base timing setting or possibly only 1-2° extra advance to start with if you are running better grade fuels.
