what are freeze plugs, & why are they leaking on my car.

when i got my differential work done to my car, the mechanic told me my drivers side freeze plug is leaking running down my engine and then dripping onto my frame. This explains the ghost antifreeze promblem im having and to fix it the engine has to be lifted off the mount. And angled tools have to be used to punch it loose.

My sister had a calvaler z24 and after a minor accident they went one by one and its $5.00 a plug but like $300 in labor. Im just gonna wait cause im putting a Crate 350 in at the end of summer so i have something to do during winter. Obviously is not major cause I have been driving like it for awhile. So I wont bother with it.

My question is, what do they do (besides leak)?

I beleive thire for a case that you dont have anti frezze and the water in you engine freezes and as the water expands instead of your block cracking the freeze plugs push out. yeah I used the work and to much fkit

Freeze plugs are holes from when they were casting the block .Thats where they drained the sand out of the block when they were done . They then plug the wholes with porcelon or something . Your porcelon is cracked , or broken , or whatever kinda material is down there is broken or cracked and causing it to leak .

Freeze plugs are holes where they let the sand out. In cars they are just cheap steel. Eventually without good cooling system maintenance they rust through. Be careful trying to make it all summer. It could let completely go. You might put in a rubber plug instead. Theyre easier to install and I wouldnt worry bout it just for the rest of the year.

Marine motors use brass freeze plugs so they don't rust through. Cars use steel cause they're cheaper.
